Martina Büttner: Oil paintings on paper
Cannes series paintings
„Festival de Cannes“ is a series about phenomenon. Dolls in elegant wardrobes, as if they would be ready to walk over the red carpet of Cannes. Through the magnificent dresses, as if they were mannequins, the dolls get an almost trivial and familiar appearance. Do we recognize them, those Marylins, Daisies, Gretas and all the others? Distorted rebirths? This work questions the external appearance and the message associated with it – especially concerning women. What is femininity, what is celebrity, what do we sell – or will we be sold?

Diary series painting
On the paintings of the „Diary“ series dolls, like little girls, are framed by words: the noun, the verb, the adjective. In german and in french. They speak to us, differently. One word in one language does not express the same meaning as the one in the other … Words are the non-translatable expression of feelings, embossed by history and culture, though philosophy, of the country where these words are used.

Very different from painting in several coats, painting on glassine means painting in a short time, and to have only one try. Astonishing discovery of the possibilities, to represent very different materials, as cloth, velvet, fur in a very realistic manner.
