Airplanes lost in space, multimedia installation
by Martina Büttner
The birds
One of Martina Büttner’s creations, „the birds“, based on the technique of wrapping toys with plaster stripes, processes farther: in an enclosed space, around twenty black toy airplanes suspended from the ceiling are bathing in blue light which comes from a projection. By this way, they are multiplied, by their own shadows, on a large screen. Framed by a soundtrack of insect noises, strange beats and other sounds, the visitor is kind of lost in this space: it is impossible to focus neither on the objects and on their shadows nor to join the visual to the sound. This is when the physiological point of view arises, and the visitor gets included in a story … which he imagines himself.
